Leonard Frederick Ayres lived at 33 Marle Hill Road with his parents James and Elizabeth. After finishing school he worked as a hairdresser at Carters on Henrietta Street.

He enlisted in 1916 when he was just 17, as a Private in the 18th Battalion Middlesex Regiment, and was sent to fight. Leonard died on 16 April 1918 aged 19, while fighting in the Ypres sector, and having no known grave is commemorated on the Ploegsteert Memorial.
