Lionel Hubert Carr passed his London Matriculation exam (1st division) while attending Hereford Road Council School in Abergavenny. He then attended college in the 1909 – 1911 cohort, where he was part of the Troy house group. He was the son of William and Emma Carr of Lulworth, Abergavenny.
Lionel went on to become a Rifleman in the 2/21st Battalion London Regiment (First Surrey Rifles). He has 26 years old when he died on 31 October 1917, and had been fighting in Palestine. Lionel was laid to rest in Beersheba War Cemetery where his headstone reads “He Gave His Heart to His Home and His Soul to His God”.
