Mary is the only female student to feature on our First World War Roll of Honour. Originally from Cardiff, she had been a student at Cheltenham Training College from 1903 – 1905 where she trained to be a teacher. Mary went on to work as Assistant Mistress at Lansdowne Road Council School in Cardiff.

She worked as a Voluntary Aid Detachment (VAD) nurse during the war, stationed at Newport, Boulogne and Marseilles, where she stayed on after the conflict to nurse soldiers with influenza. She caught the disease herself and died on 13 February 1919, aged 35. She was buried at Marzargues Military Cemetery, Marseilles, with full military honours.
