Oliver Arkell enlisted in the 5th (Territorial) Battalion Gloucestershire Regiment in 1909 and was a member of the Cheltenham Air Rifle League.
He is likely to have been discharged from the army on medical grounds, and he died of illness on 20 March 1918, aged 26. He left a wife and daughter and is buried in Cheltenham Cemetery.
