Percy Alexander Tompkinson had attended Grafton Road Board School, Longton, Staffordshire, before training to be a teacher at Cheltenham Training College from 1903 – 1905. His parents were William and Selina. While a student, Percy was a member of the college Soccer Team. After College, Percy married Sarah and lived in Bedford.

He became a Second Lieutenant in the 6th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire and Derby Regiment) and died on 4 October 1918. He is buried at Calvaire Cemetery, Montbrehain, where his headstone reads “To live in the memory of a loved one is not to die. Haud Immemores”.
