Percy William Barnes was born on 25 March 1897. He lived in Marle Hill Road whilst a pupil at the Practising School with his parents, later going on to run The Grapes in Gloucester Place and The Odessa Inn on Tewkesbury Road. He left school in 1911 to work as an errand boy.

He and his two brothers all enlisted, with Percy joining the Royal Garrison Artillery as a Gunner. He died on 18 May 1918 at the age of 21 after being hit by a bomb dropped by an aircraft. He is buried at Abbeville Cemetery.
