Richard Ernest Simmons had been a pupil teacher at Victoria Boys’ School, Chelmsford, passing his matriculation exam first class. He joined the 1911 – 1913 year group, was part of the Nineveh house group, and passed his college exam first class at the end of his studies.

Richard joined the 232nd Siege Battery Royal Garrison Artillery as a Second Lieutenant before being sent to the Ypres sector. He died on 5 December 1917 and is buried at Solferino Farm Cemetery in France.
