Robert William Sparks came from Lewis Lane School in Cirencester to become a member of the 1914 – 1916 year group in Cheltenham. His college nickname was “Squibs” and he was a member of the rugby team. Robert was the son of Joseph and Sophia Sparks who lived at Park Terrace in Minchinhampton.

He joined the No. 1 Company 18th Battalion The Kings (Liverpool Regiment), becoming a Second Lieutenant and being awarded the Military Cross for Gallantry. He was killed on 29 April 1918 in the Ypres Sector, aged 24. Having no known grave, Robert is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial.
