Rowland Hill was originally from Tredworth in Gloucester before becoming a student at Cheltenham Training College from 1908 – 1910. He was the son of William Edward and Elizabeth Hill, of Manor Cottage, Longhope.

Rowland was a Corporal in the 5th Battalion Gloucestershire Regiment who died on 20 July 1916, aged 26. He is buried at Pozieres British Cemetery, Ovillers-La Boisselle, in the Somme region of France, where his headstone reads “He gave his life for us”.
