Samuel Standidge Boden attended Bakewell Church of England School before entering Cheltenham Training College in 1911 where he gained a first class teaching qualification. He was also a member of the college rugby team.

Samuel went on to join the 14th Battalion Durham Light Infantry, becoming a Second Lieutenant. He was killed on 15 October 1916 and having no known grave is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial.
