Sidney Mark Cann Bonfield came from Atherstone in Warwickshire, the son of Harry and Polly. He attended Cheltenham Training College from 1912 – 1914, and after passing his training qualification he also passed the London University Exam.
Sidney became a Sergeant in the Royal Engineers, Second Army Headquarters Anti-Gas School. He died on 6 April 1917, aged 24 years old, and is buried in the Hazebrouck Communal Cemetery near Calais. His brother Aubrey had died during the conflict the previous year.
