Stanley Newman Brown attended Hatherley Road School in Gloucester before becoming a student at Cheltenham Training College between 1911 – 1913. He was the son of Joseph and Agnes Brown, and after college married Gladys.

He became a Second Lieutenant in the 8th Battalion Royal Berkshire Regiment, fighting in the Somme region. Stanley died on 27 August 1918, aged 25. His body was recovered and he is buried at Longueval Road Cemetery where his headstone reads “Until the Day Break”.
