Thomas Henry Emmes was born on 14 June 1885, the son of Thomas and Emily Jane Emmes. His father Thomas died seven months before he was born. By 1891 his mother had remarried and Thomas was living with his grandmother (a launderess) at 38 Victoria Street. He was a Practising School pupil from 10 October 1892 and had previously attended St Paul’s Infants’. He was later brought up by his aunt Mary Ann Hicks in Townsend Street. After leaving the Practising School he worked at Dicks and Sons china and glass dealers at 429 High Street. He married Emily Tayler of Stow-on-the-Wold and had two sons.

Thomas joined the 10th Battalion Gloucestershire Regiment as a Private and was mortally wounded at the Battle of Pozières on 30 August 1916. He died at a casualty clearning station, aged 31, and is buried at Millencourt Communal Cemetery Extension.
