Thomas John Grinnell lived at 4 Hungerford Street. After leaving school he worked for plumber Edmund McVitie in Portland Street and became a member of the Territorial Army.

He volunteered for overseas service in the Machine Gun Corps and was posted to Belgium. His father also served as a Corporal during the conflict. Thomas was badly wounded during the 3rd Battle of Ypres and, after being sent back to England, died in hospital on 13 June 1918. He was 26 years old and is buried in Cheltenham Cemetery.
