Thomas Richard Bailey was born in South Shields in 1885 and later moved to Cheltenham.
He travelled back to South Shields to join the 2nd Battalion Durham Light Infantry, where he held the rank of Sergeant. His wife Eva Alice Bailey lived at 7 St Paul’s Terrace, St Paul’s Road. Thomas was killed in action in Belgium on 28 December 1915 age 30, and is buried at Potijze Burial Ground Cemetery. His headstone reads “Waiting for the coming of our lord Jesus. 1 Cor. 1,7.”
