Walter John Purveur was born on 5 February 1900 to Mr and Mrs James Thomas Purveur. He lived in Park Street whilst a pupil at St Paul’s Practising School from 24 September 1907.
Walter initially enlisted as a Private in the Gloucestershire Regiment before transferring to the 2nd/ 4th Battalion Hampshire Regiment. He was killed on 4 November 1918, one week before Armistice Day, while fighting at the Battle of the River Sambre. Walter is buried at Ruesnes Communal Cemetery, where his grave is marked by a cross.
