William Albert Cratchley was born on 9 March 1896 and started at the Practising School in 1903. He lived at 42 Rutland Street, and left school in 1910 to enter the world of work.

He was a Private in the 2nd Battalion Gloucestershire Regiment when he was wounded in the Ypres sector on 30 June 1915. He was sent to a casualty clearing station where he died on 12 July 1915, aged 19. He is buried at Bailleul Cemetery Extension.
