William Arthur Ashcroft had been a pupil at St Paul’s Practising School.
He initially enlisted as a Private in the Gloucestershire Regiment but was transferred to the 2nd Battalion Loyal North Lancashire Regiment. He was fighting at Beugneux Ridge when he was killed by shellfire on 30 July 1918, aged 21. William is commemorated on the Soissons Memorial as his body was never recovered.
