William Cleveley was born on 3 April 1886 and started at the Practising School in 1892. He was the son of John Cleverley who was a stonebreaker.

William was a regular solider and had enlisted in 1902, being a Private in the 1st Battalion Gloucestershire Regiment. He was a member of the initial British Expeditionary Force who left England for France on 13 August 1914. He was killed during the battle for Gheluvelt on 2 November 1914, and is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial at Ypres, having no known grave.
