William Ewart Hawkins was a student at Cheltenham Training College from 1913 – 1915. He was originally from Milkwall in the Forest of Dean, and later Moreton-in-Marsh. He was a keen sportsman, playing football, rugby and cricket, and won several medals whilst at college for running.

He had enlisted on 11 December 1914, the same day as 32 fellow students, into the 19th Battalion Royal Fusiliers as a Private. William died of wounds on 31 December 1915, having been a grenade thrower. He is buried at Bethune Town Cemetery, France.
