William James Wilson came from Carlisle where he had been a pupil at the Robert Ferguson Mixed School. His parents William and Amelia lived in Crown and Anchor Lane in the city. He trained in Cheltenham to be a teacher from 1912 – 1914 and was a member of the college rugby team.
William joined the 10th Battalion Devonshire Regiment, becoming a Second Lieutenant, and was despatched to the Balkan Front. He died on 24 April 1917, aged 23. Having no known grave he is commemorated on the Doiran Memorial in Greece.
