William John Robert Caldwell was born on 8 June 1877 and lived at 4 College Terrace. He then became a decorator and married Anne.
He joined the 10th Battalion Gloucestershire Regiment as a Private but was captured in France and became a prisoner of war. He died in captivity of dysentery on 28 July 1918, aged 41. William was exhumed and buried at Valenciennes Communal Cemetery where his headstone simply reads “Sacrificed”.
