Albert Henry Vail was born on 25 May 1922 and attended St Paul’s Practising School from September 1929 – September 1933 before going to Central School. His parents were Samuel and Gertrude who lived at West View, Tewkesbury Road, Cheltenham, and prior to this at 9 Marle Hill Court Road.

Albert joined the Royal Navy as a Signalman, transferring to the Submarine Branch on 23 February 1942. On 18 April 1943 Albert was serving on submarine P615 performing Atlantic Ocean patrols out of Freetown, West Africa. It was sunk by a German u-boat (U-123) with all hands. Albert was 21 years old and is commemorated on the Plymouth Naval Memorial.
