Alfred James Herbert was born on 7 November 1912. He was the son of Mr and Mrs John Herbert lived at 4 Courtnay Villas, then later at 316 Swindon Road, Cheltenham. Alfred was educated at St Pauls Practising School from July 1921 to July 1924 and at Cheltenham Grammar School from 1924 to 1929, after gaining a scholarship.

He volunteered as a reserve with the RAF in 1941. Leading Aircraftman Herbert was reported as having died of enteric fever on 30 September 1942 aged 30 whilst on secret duties. He is buried at Ismailia War Memorial Cemetery in Egypt and commemorated on the Borough of Cheltenham War Memorial and in the Roll of Honour persevered at Cheltenham Grammar School.
