Bernard Lionel Hughes son of Charles Hughes was born on the 14 November 1918, one of seven sons living at 3 Brooklyn Terrace, Millbrook Street, Cheltenham. He was educated at St Pauls Practising School from September 1928 – February 1933, when he left to work at Forum’s Garage. Before the outbreak of war he worked as a cycle mechanic and in the aircraft industry.
He joined the Royal Navy in 1939 serving as Able Seaman on the cruiser HMS Gloucester. Bernard was killed in active duty on 22 May 1941 aged 22. He is remembered at the Plymouth Naval Memorial and commemorated on the Borough of Cheltenham War Memorial.
