Christopher Henry Betteridge was born on 24 May 1914, the son of Christopher and Eliza Betteridge. He lived at 26 Townsend Street Cheltenham and was educated at St. Pauls Practising School from April 1922 to August 1928, leaving to work at Star Co Grocers. Christopher joined the army at the age of nineteen where he was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, Princess Louise’s (Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders) and stationed in Malaya, this was one the few Regiments charged with defending Great Britain’s far-eastern interests. 

Private Christopher Betteridge died on 7 January 1942 aged 27 in Malaya and later buried at Taiping War Cemetery, his headstone reads “In loving memory of my darling son. Sleep on, beloved, Sleep in perfect peace”.
