Frances George Emmes was born on 11 August 1915 and was the son of Thomas Henry Emmes who lost his life during the First World War. Frances lived at 10 Victoria Street. He attended St Paul’s Practising School from April 1922 – August 1929 and after he left was employed by Melius and later the antique dealer J H Gaskins.

He was conscripted in 1940 and joined the 2nd Battalion South Wales Borderers as a Private when he was sent to Normandy. Frances was fighting in woodland near Laval on 18 – 19 August when he was presumed wounded and died on 21 August 1944 aged 29. He is buried at Banneville-la-Campagne Cemetery where his headstone reads “Gone is the face, We loved so dear, Silent the voice, We longed to hear”.
