Frank Edward White was born on 27 November 1918. He was the son of Frank William White, Superintendent of The Elms children’s home on Swindon Road. Frank attended St Paul’s Practising School from September 1925 – August 1929, and later gained a scholarship to Cheltenham Grammar School before completing a Modern Languages degree at Jesus College, Cambridge in 1940.

Upon graduating he volunteered and was sent to the Officer Training School at Bangalore, becoming a Lieutenant in the 7/8th Battalion Punjab Regiment. Frank was killed during a Japanese attack on his unit in Singapore on 12 February 1942. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Singapore Memorial.
