George Young was the son of Mrs Newman (previously Young) and the stepson of Charles Newman of 2 Hudson Street and later 71 Humber Road, Cheltenham. He was born on 1st April 1922. He attended St Paul’s Practising School from April 1934 – November 1936 and upon leaving worked at Messrs F G Fildes Greengrocers of Rotunda Terrace.

George became a Lance Corporal in the 17/21 Lancers, Royal Armoured Corps and was sent to Tunisia. He was fighting in the Fondouk Pass on 9 April 1943 when he was killed, aged 21. He is buried at Enfidaville War Cemetery where his headstone reads “In true and loving memory, “Until we meet again”, R.I.P.”
