James Blackwell was one of twin brothers brought up in Cheltenham Boy’s Orphanage, St. Margaret’s Road. He was born on 20 November 1922. During his time being educated at St Pauls Practising School from September 1934 to December 1937, he would lodge with Arthur and Mrs I M Malone of Albion Street and found employment with the Smith Brothers, Timber Merchants, Albion Street, Cheltenham. 

James was conscripted into the Army in 1942 as a Private in the 2nd Battalion, The South Wales Borderers. While stationed in France, James was wounded during an attack in Le Harve and later died of his injuries on the 13 September 1944 aged 21. He is buried at St. Marie Cemetery, Le Havre.
