James Burton Vickery was the son of Frederick and Alice Vickery and was born on 30 November 1911. He lived at 36 St Paul’s Street North before moving to 20 Hungerford Street, Cheltenham. He attended St Paul’s Practising School from November 1922 – November 1923 and later joined the army as a Private in the 6th battalion Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry.

He served for 13 years, mainly in India and Burma. It was in Burma on 6 May 1944 that James was fatally wounded during a raid on the villages of Thayegonbaung and Lambaguna. He was 34 years old. James has no known grave and is commemorated on the Rangoon Memorial at the Htauk Kyant War Memorial Cemetery in modern-day Myanmar.
