John Rothwell Banks was the son of Eric and Mary Banks of “Seventy Two, 31 Shaldon Drive, Littleover, Derby. From 1935-1937 he trained to be a teacher at St Paul’s College, where his nickname was “Monty”. John was in the Sidon house group. After leaving college he married Christine and lived in Derby.

He joined the 43rd Regiment Reconnaissance Corps RAC (The Gloucestershire Regiment) as a Lieutenant and was killed on 5 August 1944 aged 27. John is buried at Bayeux War Cemetery where his headstone reads “He loved his fellow-men, His heart was, as always, In his work. He did his duty”
