Raymond Victor Gough was born on 11 October 1921. Son of Albert Victor and Eveline Gough, he lived at 7 Swindon Place and later 76 Gloucester Road, Cheltenham. Raymond was educated at St Pauls Practising School from September 1928 – July 1932 when he gained a scholarship to Cheltenham Grammar School.

He volunteered with the RAF in 1941 undertaking aircrew duties attached to the Reserve, 9 (Ipswich’ Own) Squadron, training as a Navigator in Canada under the Empire Scheme. Flight Sergeant Gough was killed in action when the aircraft was brought down by anti-aircraft fire over Ludwigshafen on 6 September 1943 aged 21. After the war his remains were reinterred in Durnbach War Cemetery in Germany.
