Robert Henry Fawcett Downes trained to be a teacher at St Paul’s College from 1932-1934. He was the son of Henry and Mary of Cleobury Mortimer, Shropshire.
He became a Leading Seaman on HM Trawler Ellesmere in the Royal Navy. The St Paul’s College admission book notes “Killed Feb 1945. (Ship torpedoed in the Channel convoy work)”. He died on 24 February 1945 and having been lost at sea is commemorated on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial.
