Roland Clift was born on 29th December 1924. He was the son of Charles and Lillian Clift and lived at Brooksdale Cottage, Shurdington Road, Cheltenham. After attending St Pauls Practising School from August 1934 to September 1934 he was employed at the H P Folland Aircraft Company at Staverton and was conscripted at the age of 18.

Private Clift served in the 2nd Battalion The Gloucestershire Regiment also known as the Polar Bears due to their distinctive shoulder flash. It is likely that Roland may have been a victim of either a sniper or machine gun fire during an early morning patrol in the village of Boeken on 25 November 1944, he was aged 19. He is buried at Jonkerbos War Cemetery.
