Sidney Richard Miles was born on 9 January 1906. He was the son of George and Hannah Miles and lived at “Marieville”, The Burgage, Prestbury. He was educated at St Pauls Practising School from September 1913 – December 1919 and later worked for A Williams & Co cycle engineers and at Cheltenham Motor and Cycle Company.

He was conscripted into the army in 1940 serving in the 67th Field Regiment, Royal Artillery during the Italian campaign. Gunner Miles died on 7 May 1944 aged 38 after contracting a fever. He is buried at Salerno War Cemetery. The headstone reads “At the going down of the sun, and in the morning, we will remember him.” His name appears on the Memorial tablet at St Mary’s Church Prestbury.
