This month’s item is a christening certificate with a difference. One of the old initiation traditions of St Paul’s students was to assemble a “Jury” of senior students to assign nicknames to the unsuspecting first years.

This certificate was given to student J R Thompson in November 1928. He was given the name “Roscoe” and his College “Father” (a student in the senior year) was R Southern. The Auctioneer would have led the proceedings along the lines of the photograph below, taken outside the North Porch at Francis Close Hall.
