BGAS Library Open Day – Saturday 20th July

The Archive Room will be open on Saturday 20th July, 10am to 4pm, for the Bristol and Gloucestershire Archaeological Society’s Open Library Day.
The event is part of the Council for British Archaeology’s Festival of Archaeology – an annual event which sees many archaeology-related activities taking place across the UK for two weeks in July. More information on other venues can be found on the CBA’s website.
The BGAS Library will open on a Saturday and have many of our treasures on show, as well as browsing access to the Library shelves. Archive staff and members of BGAS will also be present to help with your research queries.
This year the Library received a unique collection of original plates and illustrations of Ralph Bigland’s Historical, Monumental and Genealogical Collections, relative to the County of Gloucester, copies of which were originally published in the late eighteenth century. This unique material we be available to view on the day.
The BGAS Library houses over 8000 books and journals, the oldest dating from 1520. There are extensive collections relating to Bristol and Gloucestershire, the wider UK and beyond with topics including history, archaeology, records, church history, law, education, industry, decorative arts, architecture, genealogy and historical research.
