1925 School of Art film footage

The Old Cheltenham Twitter account (@Old_Cheltenham) recently shared this piece of film footage showing Cheltenham School of Arts and Crafts students in 1925. They can be seen re-enacting scenes from Noah’s Ark dressed in fabulous animal costumes.
The School went on to become the Gloucestershire College of Art in 1959, Gloucestershire College of Arts and Technology (GlosCAT) in 1980, then merged with the College of St Paul and St Mary in 1990 to form Cheltenham and Gloucester College of Higher Education (phew!). CGCHE became the University of Gloucestershire in 2001.
The Special Collections and Archives hold some archive material relating to the Cheltenham School of Arts and Crafts. We have prospectuses from 1912 onwards and committee minutes from 1929 onwards.
The 1924-1925 prospectus details a variety of day and evening classes on offer, including life drawing, antique drawing, modelling design, illustration, etching, leather work, drapery studies, ironwork design, stained-glass design, typography and wood carving. There were also classes for painters and decorators, teachers and embroiderers.

The School was located on St Margaret’s Road, near what is now The Brewery site.
