Local Heritage Initiative

The Local Heritage Initiative (LHI) was a unique partnership between the Heritage Lottery Fund, the Countryside Agency who managed the operation, and Nationwide Building Society. Beginning in 2000, the scheme awarded over 1000 grants throughout England until formerly ending in 2006. It was described as a small funding scheme that aimed to enable communities to investigate, explain, and care for their local landmarks, landscape, traditions and culture.

Communities were encouraged to establish projects which explored their unique local heritage and covered aspects such as archaeology, industry, the natural and built environment and customs and traditions. Communities then produced items such as booklets, multimedia and oral histories of which the Special Collections and ArchivesĀ hold copies of.
