Protest, Reform and Repression in Khrushchev’s Soviet Union

Hearty congratulations to Rob Hornsby for the publication of his book Protest, Reform and Repression in Khrushchev’s Soviet Union (Cambridge University Press, 2013). Rob was an AHRC-funded PhD student attached to a three-year project on ‘Policy and Governance in the Soviet Union under Nikita Khrushchev’ and was supervised by Melanie Ilic (University of Gloucestershire) and Jeremy Smith at the Centre for Russian and East European Studies, The University of Birmingham.
Rob’s PhD examines the origins of Soviet political dissent under Khrushchev, and the book extends this study further to encompass a broader range of dissenting activities evident in the late 1950s and early 1960s. In the course of his research, Rob made an extensive trawl through the Procurator files held in the Moscow archives and interviewed a number of former Soviet dissidents now resident in the West.
Rob’s next research project, as a Leverhulme Early Career Fellow, examines the activities of the post-Stalin Komsomol, the Communist Party’s youth section.
