After a career working in teaching, alumnus William McElhinney is celebrating 50 years since starting his studies at the former Gloucestershire College of Education.

William arrived from Northern Ireland to join the college in 1973, and was one of the first male intake of general students. The college was based at Oxstalls Lane in Gloucester, and was a predecessor of University of Gloucestershire.

And after his long career working with young people, he received an MBE from Princess Anne at Windsor Castle for his services to education.

William said: “After completing my a Certificate in Education and subsequent graduation with a BEd Hons degree, I returned to Northern Ireland, having secured my first teaching job in a Primary School in Londonderry.

“Having completed 42 years in primary education, 33 years of which were as Principal in two different schools I retired in 2019. And in 2022 I was thrilled to receive an MBE from Princess Anne at Windsor Castle for services to education in Northern Ireland.”

Despite officially retiring, William is now inspiring new teachers in Northern Ireland.

“In semi-retirement,” he said, “I am privileged to work with the next generation of teachers at Stranmillis University College in Belfast as an associate.” And 50 years on, William says his initial teacher training still resonates, adding “I remain indebted to the staff at the Gloucestershire College of Education, for their professional and supportive investment in my life. I would like to send my very best wishes to the University of Gloucestershire for the future, as it continues to celebrate its many achievements and successes.”
