Second Year Ruby Rosser, Photographs the Head Greenskeeper at Dinas Powys Golf Club as part of the Portrait to Promote brief.

This is a portrait of Julian – known to his friends and family as ‘Jinxy’. He is the Head Greenskeeper at Dinas Powys golf Club, overseeing the upkeep and general maintenance of the course, used by professionals and amateurs golfers.

I wanted to continue and develop my knowledge of portraiture work and ‘The Portrait to Promote’ brief helped me achieve that. I wanted to produce a portrait of Jinxy in his work environment, without him posing for the portrait, a more caught moment.

I shot this image on the Hasselblad 500cm, allowing me to develop my knowledge on medium format and build my confidence in working with unfamiliar cameras. I decided to photograph Jinxy on the golf course to establish a sense of place, and wearing his working clothes, to hint at the nature of his work.
