Second Year, Isabella Akers photographs a Grunge inspired fashion series for the Zine brief.

For the subcultures brief I decided to look into grunge as it’s something I’m very familiar with and have loved the music genre for years.

My knowledge of the subculture has enabled my work to be more authentic by looking into multiple editorials but one that stuck out for me was Marc Jacobs for Perry Ellis 1992.

I did two shoots inspired by different sub-genres of the grunge subculture. The first was just the typical grunge style with oversized clothing, tartan and layers, popularised by bands in the 90s from the Seattle area of Washington such as Soundgarden, Nirvana and Alice in chains, just to name a few.

The other was inspired by ‘kinderwhore’, made famous by female grunge bands such as Courtney Love’s band Hole and Babes in Toyland. This focused on a contradictory aesthetic, childlike clothes however provocative at the same time. It was meant to be a mix of grunge, punk and Kubrick’s Lolita style.
