2nd Year Ben Russell shoots stills work for the Editorial & Moving Image module and workscollaboratively with Callum McEntevy for ‘Twisted Lane’ Moving Image

Sustainability brief:

During this module I wanted to explore portraiture as I had usually avoided it in the past. I chose the sustainability brief as it allowed me to shoot portraits. For this project I contacted a local group of volunteers called ‘The Cheltenham Tree Group’. These volunteers donate many hours of their time to grow and maintain trees that they then sell. The funds raised are then donated to charities, often that support tree planting in both the UK and abroad. It was a great opportunity to support such a great cause and to meet some interesting people. The images I produced then helped towards to the creation of the groups new Instagram page: https://www.instagram.com/cheltenhamtreegroup/

Moving Image and Zine brief:

For the Moving Image brief Callum McEntevy and I needed to cover both of our areas of specialisations, which are street photography (/ nature) and car photography. We decided upon producing a short piece that featured at night and created a feeling of unease.  We both had little experience with moving image, however we persevered and learned many new skills along the way, as well as having fun.

To accompany the moving image, I created a zine that maintained the focus of car and street photography. I wanted to produce a series of images that carried on the theme of our moving image, by having that sense of unease. The images identify places that are frequently driven past by cars but with a closer look. I Took inspiration from Langdon Clay’s series ‘Cars, New York City’, where he took long exposures of cars lit by colourful lights. I too used long exposure to capture the light sources of the night.
