The annual awards from the Society of Garden Designers (SGD) are still open for entires to the Student Award. Note that you need to be a student member of the SGD to enter (£65 but well worth it for the magazine alone). Bill Burford (Landscape Architecture Course Leader here at the university) is one of the judges along with Richard Sneesby, Trudie Entwistle, Arabella StJohn-Parker and Paul Nulty.  Arabella will be judging the student awards. Also one of our part time tutors, Rose Lennard, has submitted her designs for the awards this year.

The note below is from the Philippa O’Brien (SGD Council Member):

“Now in its second year the SGD Student Awards offer a perfect springboard for any budding designer’s career.  Last year’s winner Jon Sims said:

“I had never considered entering a competition previously, but this one came along at an opportune moment, as I was producing what I felt was good work at college, so I gave it a go. I was pretty stunned to get shortlisted and it came at the end of the course so really helped to reaffirm my decision to study garden design at LCGD. Then to win it against great competition was a real boon. The judging panel, including Andy Sturgeon and Tom Hoblyn said very positive things about my work, which is a real confidence boost to a fledgling career.”

This year, we are thrilled to have Tom Stuart-Smith on the judging panel alongside two of last year’s judges: designer Sarah Eberle MSGD and Arabella St John Parker, Houses & Gardens Editor at Homes & Gardens magazine – the Awards Media Partner.

There is no brief, no size, no limits to the type or number of entries that a student member can submit in the Student Awards.  Judges will be looking for outstanding design skills and a demonstration of a clear understanding of the brief provided.

There is still plenty of time for students to enter submissions.  The final date for receipt of entries is Monday 12th August 2013, but early bird discounts apply to students who make an expression of intent to apply along with payment of the entry fee before Monday 8th July 2013.

Whilst the SGD Student Award is designed to rewarding talented student designers, the Society recognises that great talent is often nurtured and developed by great tutors and will acknowledge and reward the educational establishment where the winning student received their training with certificates for both the winning student and college  at the Awards ceremony in January 2014.

You can find further information on the dedicated Awards website www.sgdawards.com or contact the SGD office for further information info@sgd.org.uk.”
