Project Title and Sponsor  HM Biodiversity Commitment 2030 targets Sponsor: Paul Williams
Objective – What are the overall objectives of the overall project?.To assist Hanson UK in meeting its 2023 contribution towards Heidelberg Materials’ Biodiversity Commitment 2030 targets.   Heidelberg Materials has committed to a target that by 2030 100% of active quarries will contribute to ‘nature positive’ with 15% space for nature.  The defined target for 2023 is to identify the baseline position at our active quarries.  The Biodiversity Commitments also include obligations for 100% of our quarries to have specified reclamation plans and biodiversity management plans.  Interim targets for 2023 are set out in the scope below.
Define the scope of the project –   What business lines/business areas/sites will the project touch?   If part of a larger project, define the larger project and then explain the stage which the intern will be involved with?    The project will primarily focus on active quarries within the Aggregates, Cementitious and MQP business lines.   The overall scope of the project comprises:   Space for Nature. Gather baseline data for all active quarries and illustrate on agreed template plan. Biodiversity Management Plans (BMPs) (quarries). Ensure all active quarries have an in-date BMP as at 31/12/23BMPs (non-extractive sites). At least 15% of all in-scope active sites to have a BMP by 31/12/23.Reclamation Plans. At least 15% of all active quarries to have an ‘HM Standards’ compliant reclamation plan by 31/12/23.   The successful intern candidate will be given a bespoke work programme incorporating the above scope, based on their individual capabilities, career aspirations and geographical location.  The work programme will ensure that the intern is able to deliver a measurable component of the overall project within the internship period, thus generating a sense of reasonable expectation during the internship and job satisfaction upon meeting the defined goals.
Time frame – how long will the total project be expected to run for?   Can the intern’s area of responsibility be completed over a 9 week period?    The overall project will continue throughout 2023 but, as stated above, a detailed work programme will be devised to produce clear deliverables within the 9 week internship period.
Resource requirements – Who else is involved    LMR’s four landscape managers will all be involved with one of them nominated to directly supervise the intern’s role.  The Head of LMR will have overall responsibility for the project, reporting to the Aggregates MD and liaising with the Sustainability Director.
Where will the project activities need to be based? – To understand the logistics requirements, we will need to know the location from which the intern will work, and some indication of the travel requirements that will also be needed.    Given that the overall project is national, there is flexibility on the location of the internship and the work programme will take account of this.  Site visits will be arranged with, and accompanied by, the LMR Landscape team.
Selection Who will be responsible for interviewing the intern?   Are there any key skills or knowledge requirements -if so what Degree is likely to provide these?  Paul Williams and/or a member of the LMR Landscape team.   A basic knowledge of rural landscapes, biodiversity and natural habitats would be expected. Degrees in landscape management, landscape architecture/design, ecology or other environmental sciences would be suitable.   A full clean diving licence would be an advantage and may be essential depending on location.
