Invitation to country walk in Slad valley

Rowan Middleton (eco-poetry lecturer) is arranging a trip next week to Slad, former home of celebrated writer Laurie Lee. You are invited to walk with him through the Gloucestershire countryside to experience the historic village setting of Laurie Lee’s classic book Cider with Rosie. The trip will take place on Tuesday 30th April. It is free, but you’ll need to fill in this health and safety form to book your place, please use ‘Slad’ as the reference: https://app.onlinesurveys.jisc.ac.uk/s/glos/health-and-safety-form-2023-24-templa-accn6onkhc5rn4ofsicir6dd

The trip will involve a 7.9km walk in the countryside (about two and a half hours).

Here is the itinerary:

Make your own way to the bus shelter outside the church in Painswick for 1015. For those going from Cheltenham, the 66 bus leaves the promenade at 0935 and arrives in Painswick at 1015.

Buses also go to Painswick from Gloucester (change at Brome Road) and Stroud. See https://www.stagecoachbus.com/ to plan your journey.

We will walk to Slad on footpaths and small roads. See link for our route: https://www.outdooractive.com/en/r/288215982?share=%7Ezyhhuhap%244ossetlp&utm_source=unknown&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=user-shared-social-content

We will explore Slad then walk to Stroud for lunch at Falafel Mama. If there is time, we can visit the Museum in the Park to view Laurie Lee’s violin (among other things).

For those returning to Cheltenham by public transport, the 66 bus leaves every hour from Stroud Merrywalks. There is also an hourly train to Cheltenham from Stroud Railway Station. Regular trains and buses are also available to Gloucester.
