Call for submissions: Heritage: New Writing VIII

We are calling for submissions of prose, poetry, and artwork to Heritage, a new anthology of creative writing from the University of Gloucestershire.

What does Heritage mean to you? Family? Memory? Monuments? Home? Borders? History? Mementos? Conflict? Or something completely different?

However you interpret Heritage, we want to see your work!

We’re accepting submissions from 4th February until midnight on Friday March 8th 2019, and all submissions should be emailed to heritageanthology@gmail.com. Before submitting, please read the guidelines below.

Who can submit?

  • Current students who are enrolled on any programme at the University of Gloucestershire, whether they are part-time or full-time, studying undergraduate or postgraduate, campus based or distance learners.
  • Former students who have previously studied any programme at the University of Gloucestershire.
  • All those currently employed by the University of Gloucestershire in any capacity.
    This is for all of us!

What can you submit?

  • We are looking for creative prose (up to 2500 words), poetry (up to 40 lines), and artwork, in any style or genre.
  • We are not seeking scripts or essays. Sorry.
  • You can submit up to 3 pieces of prose, up to four poems, and up to six pieces of visual art.
  • You are welcome to submit pieces you have used for assignments.
  • But all work must be previously unpublished.

How can you submit?

  • Please email your submissions to heritageanthology@gmail.com before midnight on Friday March 8th 2019.
  • The subject title of your email should be “Prose submission(s)” or “Poetry submission(s)” or “Art Submission(s)” or “Prose and poetry submissions” or “Prose, poetry and art submissions” (etc.) as appropriate.
  • Your piece(s) should be sent to us as attachments, and all written submissions should be in .doc or .docx format.
  • All written submissions should be presented in 11pt double spaced Arial or Times New Roman font.
  • The body of your email should include your full name (and any pseudonym you wish to publish under), your relationship to the University of Gloucestershire (e.g., “I studied a BA in History at the University from 2006-2009), and a 3rd-person bio of not more than 50 words.
  • Please do not include your name on the attached submissions as the selection of pieces will be done anonymously.
  • All work is subject to edits by our Prose and Poetry Editors, but don’t worry: our editors will work with you on any amendments, and we won’t publish anything without your full agreement.
    Nearly there! But before submitting, please check the detailed instructions for each genre.

Prose (including creative non-fiction)

  • We will accept short stories (max. 2,500 words), flash fiction (max. 500 words) and creative non-fiction (max. 2,500 words).
  • Transgressive themes and language are welcome under the provision that they are handled with sensitivity and are not used gratuitously.
  • Each piece should be self-contained. It can be an extract from a longer work, but must be able to stand alone.
  • We welcome a maximum of three prose submissions per author.
  • All work should include the title in the header and the page number in the footer.
  • All work should be submitted in .doc or .docx format.
  • All work should be double line spaced and presented in 11pt Arial or Times New Roman.
  • Please adhere to standard manuscript formatting.

Poetry

  • We will accept any form or poetry genre (up to 40 lines).
  • Please submit up to four poems per author.
  • We are interested in poems which explore the concept of ‘heritage’ and we want to be surprised, seduced, unsettled and enchanted. Send us your ‘poems that aren’t what they say they are.’
  • All poetry should be submitted in a single document, with each poem on a new page.
  • All work should be submitted in 11pt double spaced Arial or Times New Roman and saved in .doc or .docx format.
  • All submissions are anonymous, so please make sure your name does not appear anywhere in the document.
  • The author should include a short 50 words bio with the submission email.

Artwork

  • The deadline for artwork submissions is later than the deadline for written submissions. We’re accepting submissions of artwork up until 12th April 2019.
  • All submissions should be emailed, in their highest quality form (TIFF or JPG)
  • You can submit up to six images in the first instance. Separate files are fine.
  • A5 size in portrait is preferred.
  • All images should be in B&W or suitable to be published in B&W.
  • Innovative approaches are encouraged: think etchings, block prints, watercolour, even single page comics or cartoons – provided the quality is there, we’ll be interested.
  • A connection to the theme of Heritage is welcome, but not required.
  • We are also interested in a colour image for the cover. If you have an idea or something that seems suitable, please submit it with a note to that effect.

The small print

By submitting, creators assert that the attached is their own work. Before and after publication, all rights remain with the creator. The editors’ decisions are final and we are unable to enter into discussion.
