Creative Writing and English Literature at the Degree Show!

Degree Show 2025 – a report by Giorgia Caso, graduating Creative Writing and English Literature student

For the first time ever, English and creative writing courses had the chance to exhibit their work at the Degree Show. It was a great opportunity to see printed poems, writing processes and plays along with games created by us students. We also displayed the QR codes for the recordings of our work published in the UoG Anthology. In fact, the collaboration with The Cotswold Listener was another great experience that we were delighted to share.

The showcase of dissertation posters as well was more than just what our course is about. It was about unveiling our creativity in a more artistic way while also demonstrating that being a writer doesn’t only mean that we just write. Art and writing go hand in hand which is what our contribution to the Degree Show proved. Thanks to our lecturers, we were able to put up posters and other pieces of artwork on the walls and all around the Living Room. In that space, our course had the opportunity to decorate the room and display our work in a way that reflected our creativity. Even if our lectures are at Francis Close Hall, we were lucky to explore another campus such as Park. This was also an exciting way to learn more about our university.

At the launch of the degree show, a reading of poems and extracts from stories were read. With a different range of writing styles and genres, the reading was the result of years of hard work we put into the course. It was the culmination of hours and hours of drafting and rewriting. For some, it was their first time reading in front of an audience and for others it wasn’t. This also evidences how varied our course is but also how many skills we develop alongside the lectures.

Towards the end of the event, a few students were recompensed with a prize. As our course is diversified so were our prizes. I personally received one for ‘outstanding professional engagement’ because I engaged with different roles outside of my course, such as volunteering and internships, but there were also other prizes given to other students.

Right after the break, there was the displaying of films made by us students. From poetry films to other kinds of videos, this occasion proved once again that we are more than just writers. We are artists, playing with different medias, different writing styles also in association with other artistic forms. In conclusion, this event was an excellent experience that opened to more possibilities and collaborations between university departments. All the hard work we have put in for the last few years has come to an end with this wonderful event. It was a way to say goodbye for some students but also to realise our potential that can be easily transformed into great achievements.
